Entry Qualifications

  • Citizenship Education: Applicant must possess at least a Bachelor’s degree or HND passed at distinction or upper credit in Education, Social Sciences or any related discipline such as Arts (Communication, Fine Arts, Drama, and Languages).
  • Gender Education: Applicant must have a minimum of Bachelor’s degree or HND certification in any area of Education and Social Sciences, Arts and Sciences, passed at distinction or credit level.
  • Office Administration and Technology Education: Candidates must have obtained a minimum of Bachelor’s Degree or HND certification in any area of Education, Social Sciences, ICT or other professionals whose detailed “academic records are acceptable to Senate of the University of Nigeria may be admitted.”
  • “Women Education: Requires at least a Bachelor’s Degree or HND certification in any area of Education, Social Sciences, ICT or other fields whose detailed academic records are acceptable to Senate of the University of Nigeria may be admitted.”

GENERAL ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

  • Postgraduate programme aspirants of the University must have obtained 5 credits at not more than two sittings in WASC or GCE or NECO or NABTEB which should include the English Language.
  • Aspirants must also possess the minimum required entry qualifications for admission into first degree and postgraduate programmes in the areas of interest for postgraduate studies
  • UNN Graduates or Candidates from other recognized Universities who have the above qualifications are eligible for the application.
  • For the PGD in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Architecture, only candidates with University degrees in relevant areas need to apply.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

The following may qualify for Postgraduate Diploma admission:

  • University of Nigeria Graduates or Candidates from other recognized Universities who have obtained a bachelor’s degree certification with at least a third-class honors.
  • A minimum of third class honors in Business Administration or Education, Social Sciences, Law, or Arts is required for Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration.
  • Candidates from the unmentioned fields above should, in addition, possess at least three years of cognate post-qualification experience in administrative/managerial positions to be eligible.
    For PGD in Business Administration, the 3rd Class Honors must be from Business Administration.
  • (ii) Candidates who possess Higher National Diploma (HND) with a 3.50 Grade Point Average on a five-point scale or equivalent may be admitted.
  • Postgraduate Diploma aspirants in Business Administration, that have other professional qualifications such as Associate Certified Chartered Accountants, Associate Institute of Bankers, Associate Cost and Management Accountants, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Chartered Professional Accountants, Associate Chartered Institute of Accountants, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, etc., have added advantage for admission.
  • Candidates, who have professional qualifications which include HND, should have obtained pre-professional qualifications which include 5 credit pass in WASC or GCE O/L or NECO to satisfy the basic University entry requirement, for admission for degree courses into respective departments
  • (iii) furthermore to (i) or (ii) above, in special cases, candidates may be admitted after passing such tests as may be prescribed by the Department/Faculty.
  • (iv) Candidates with other qualifications deemed equivalent to the above and accepted by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and the University of Nigeria Senate may be admitted.

FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Nutrition and Dietetics (PGD)

Candidates must have obtained any of the below-listed qualifications from recognized institutions in order to be admitted into UNN PGD programme in Nutrition and Dietetics:

  • HND in Nutrition and Dietetics with a minimum of Upper Credit or Third Class Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics with at least 2.0 GPA on a 5-point scale.
  • M. Sc in Nutrition and Dietetics: Aspiring candidates for this programme must have obtained the following qualifications:
    • HND certification with Upper Credit level in Nutrition and/or Dietetics with PGD (Credit level and above) in Human Nutrition and/or Dietetics.
    • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Honors (Lower Division) in Nutrition and Dietetics.
    • Bachelor’s degree in similar fields with at least Second Class Honors (Lower Division) and PGD in Nutrition and Dietetics at credit level and above in as much qualified the University matriculation requirements.
  • Ph.D. or M.Sc/Ph.D.: Aspirants for a Ph.D. degree programme or M.Sc/Ph.D. programme in Human Nutrition and Dietetics must have obtained any of the following qualifications from a recognized institution:
    • Master’s degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics with at least a GPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale.

Department of Home Science

  • PGD: Candidates seeking admission for PGD in Home Science must have any of the following qualifications from a recognized institution:
    • HND in Home Science/Economics or relevant fields with a minimum of Upper Credit, or Third class Bachelor’s degree in Home Science/Economics with at least 2.0 GPA on a 5-point scale.
  • M.Sc: Aspirants must have any of the following qualifications from a recognized institution:
    • Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Honors (Lower Division) in Home Science or similar field.
    • Bachelor’s degree with at least Third Class honors in Home Science or related discipline plus PGD passed at Upper Credit level and above.
    • HND Upper Credit plus PGD at Credit level and should have met the University matriculation requirements.
  • Ph.D. or M.Sc/Ph.D.: Aspirants must possess a Master’s Degree in Home Science/Home Economics or similar discipline obtained from recognized Institution.

MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMME ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • The University of Nigeria Graduates or of other recognized universities who possess a Bachelor’s degree in relevant disciplines with a minimum of second class honors with not less than 2.50 GPA.
  • University of Nigeria Candidates with relevant Postgraduate Diplomas or applicants from any other recognized universities with the minimum of credit level passes and the minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale or 3.0 on a 4-point scale.
  • Aspirants whose first degrees are unclassified but have an average score of 50% or above.
  • For M.Ed. degree programmes, aspirants with a minimum of a good second class single honors degree in teaching subjects as well as a minimum of merit level pass at Postgraduate Diploma in Education, or candidates with a third-class honors degree in teaching subjects plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education passed at credit level or above.
  • MPA degree programme aspirants should in addition to (i) and (ii) above, be serving administrative/managerial staff in the Public or Private sector with a minimum of two years post-qualification cognate experience.
  • Candidates with professional Fellowship qualifications such as FIMLT, FNILT, NIPR, or similar qualifications obtained via examination.
  • However, aspirants with the professional certificates listed above must have worked as Senior Technologist(s) or an equivalent position(s) for a minimum of three years.
  • For MD degree Programme in the Department of Medicine: Candidate should possess the Fellowship in Medicine, obtained from the National Postgraduate Medical College or its equivalent, or a minimum of M.Sc. degree in the relevant discipline in which research work predominates, from a recognized university after obtaining the MBBS or its equivalent
  • GPA of at least 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale in the relevant medical science is required for the Master’s degree.
  • An aspirant should possess a degree in Medicine (MBBS, MBBCh) from the University of Nigeria or any other recognized University in order to be admitted for M.Sc. degree programme in the Department of Medicine.
  • Aspirants should in addition to (i) above, possess a minimum of three years relevant post qualification experience or at least a Second Class Honors degree in Medical Microbiology, Pharmacy, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing Sciences, Sociology, and Social Work, Psychology, Health Education, DVM, MBBS, and BDS to be admitted for MPH Degree Programme in the University of Nigeria, aspirants will undergo screening by the Department to further and base their recommendation on such screening result For MPH degree programme.
  • Candidates who possess qualifications other than the above listed, which are acceptable to the Senate of the University of Nigeria may be admitted.

DOCTORATE DEGREE (Ph.D.) PROGRAMME ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • UNN candidates or applicants from other recognized Universities who have obtained Master’s degree appropriate for the proposed areas of study will qualify for Doctorate Degree admission. Specifically:€
  • A minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale is a must for admission into the Ph.D. programme in all Departments apart from those departments listed in C(ii) below:
  • At least a GPA of 4.0 on a 5-point scale is required for admission into Ph.D. programmes in Economics, Music, Public Administration and Local Government, Psychology and Faculties of Education, Medical Sciences, Health Sciences and Technology, and Business Administration Departments/Faculties.
  • Requires at least GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale or a B (60%) at Master’s degree average provided that satisfactory research work formed part of the Master’s Degree programme

MASTER’S/Ph.D. DEGREE PROGRAMME ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • A candidate who has obtained a first-class honor from a recognized University may be admitted into a Master’s/Ph.D. programme in his/her discipline.
  • An aspirant who has acquired a Master’s degree certification from a recognized University with a minimum GPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale or 3.00 on a 4-point scale and wishes to do Ph.D. degree in a related area/ department shall qualify for the Master’s/Ph.D., but any candidate who is disqualified for Ph.D. admission on account of low GPA is also disqualified for admission into Master’s/Ph.D. programme.
  • Candidate who have Master’s degree GPA of 3.50 and above, but not up to 4.00 may apply for Master’s/Ph.D. admission for Faculties and Departments where Master’s degree with 4.00 points GPA and above is the condition for Ph.D. admission, On completion of Master’s degree coursework specified by the Department, the candidate shall be qualified for a firm Ph.D. registration if he or she achieves a GPA of 4.00 in the Master’s courses

SANDWICH POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

– Available M.Ed. Sandwich programmes of the Faculty of Education are on Adult Education, Arts Education, Science Education, Health & Physical Education with options in (Physical Education & Recreation, Health Education), Social Science Education, and
Vocational Teacher Education.

DURATION OF COURSES

  • Postgraduate Diploma (Regular) – Two semesters.
  • Postgraduate Diploma (Sandwich) – Three Long Vacations.
  • Master’s degree (Regular):
    • 3 semesters minimum for full-time and 5 semesters for part-time in all Departments/Faculties except for the Departments/Faculties listed in c (ii) below.
    • 4 semesters minimum for Full-time and 6 semesters for part-time for Agriculture, Sociology, Veterinary Medicine, Psychology, Public Administration and Local Government (PALG), Education and Business Administration Departments/Faculties
  • Ed. (Sandwich) – three long vacations.
  • D. degree Programme – 6 semester minimum for full time and 8 semesters for part-time in all Faculties except Agriculture which is 4 semesters for full time and 6 semesters for part-time. (Ph.D. is not run as a Sandwich programme).

Candidates are expected to finish their programmes at the minimum duration and should not exceed the maximum. (See Postgraduate Regulations).

REGISTRATION

  • Candidates are considered for admission once in a session for Regular/Sandwich programme, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters and Doctorate degree programmes.
  • It is expected that Regular students registered their postgraduate courses within four weeks from the commencement of the session.
  • Sandwich programmes candidates are expected to register not later than two weeks from the commencement of the sandwich session.

METHOD OF APPLICATION FOR THE UNN MASTERS FORM 2020/2021 POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA AND DOCTORATE DEGREE

  • UNN MASTERS Form 2020/2021 Postgraduate Diploma And Doctorate Degree application Forms can be obtained ONLINE and a non-refundable fee ofN25,000.00 (Twenty-five thousand naira only) is required and should be paid to The University of Nigeria Postgraduate Application Fees Account, at any bank within the country using the Remita platform
  • Visit www.unnportal.unn.edu.ng
  • Click on ‘PG Application form’ to generate an invoice for payment.
  • Input your functional phone number to generate the invoice.
  • Proceed to any Bank and make the payment through Remita.
  • Go back to the UNN Portal with your payment confirmation pin obtained from the Bank after the payment and follow the procedure for completing the form.

REFEREE REPORTS

  • Every candidate is required to input their referee’s functional email address when completing the application form, through which a link will be sent to the Referees with a request to fill the Report Form with respect to the candidate and submit online.
  • Candidates are required to download the three (3) completed Referee Report Forms and package them in an envelope and submit to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies along with their completed online application forms.

Note: Applications would not be processed unless the referee reports are submitted.

TRANSCRIPTS

  • Candidates are expected to download transcript request forms (D2) online, and submit to their former Universities/Institutions to forward their academic transcript(s) to The Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka not later than 15th April 2020.
  • Application form of a candidate whose transcript is not available on or before the deadline shall not be processed.

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FORMS

  • Most of the required information would be completed online, but a copy of the completed online application form should be downloaded and printed.
  • The printed online completed application form with the relevant documents as listed below should be sent to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, for Nsukka based faculties, To the Deputy Registrar, School of Postgraduate Unit, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus for Enugu Campus-based faculties.

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR EVERY CANDIDATE

  • Every candidate will partake in a computer-based Postgraduate admission screening test.
  • Applicants are advised to check out for information on screening processes through the UNN official Website www.unn.edu.ng from, Wednesday 1st July 2020, for your further necessary action.
  • The Screening Test will hold on 17th and 18th July 2020.

NOTE: Aspirants for the Ph.D. degree programme in the University must have published a minimum of one article from his/her Ph.D. Thesis or obtained an acceptance letter from a journal certified by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka as a condition for graduation.
